What Will Projectors Be Like In The Future?

Sunday, June 29th, 2014

178800526 (2)Technology slows down for no man, and it shouldn’t. We are developing new ideas and concepts at such an alarming rate that it would be almost idiotic for it to slow down for society. Society moves fast anyway, so it would make sense for the advancements in our tech to move at the same speed. We’ve seen the tablets, the smartphones, the computers, and the smartwatches. What about the projectors? What about the projectors that are going to be available for recreational use, and not just for office meetings? There is a lot changing and developing with the new projector technology. Whether it be 4K, short throw, holograms, interactive, or even higher functioning pico and portable projectors, we have a lot to look forward to with the new technology.

While we know that the projectors are looking towards the future, it does make one wonder, “what is the next step for projectors to push for?”

There are plenty of avenues open for projectors right now. They have a plethora of different realms that they can put more focus and funding towards. Though, just because you can spend money on something doesn’t mean that you should. Instead, developers should be focusing on what is going to generate the most revenue now so that they can put profits towards funding for the other ideals. If mobile projectors are going to bring in the most money right now, then that is where more funding should be going. Mind you though, there is a reason why I said mobile projectors.

Lets think for a second about the technology that we use every day. We use our laptops, smartphones, and tablets. These all fall into the category of mobile technology. Shouldn’t it only make sense that we bring the same idea towards the development of new projectors? Yes, 4K is nice, if you have a big enough screen for it (and the pockets for it). Holograms and Interactive projectors are always fun and entertaining, but also very costly to create and can be unresponsive. Short Throw projectors are good for a STRICTLY entertainment-only projector that is designated to be stationary. The more mobile projectors are where I feel there could be a lot more promise for companies.

With the use of the mobile projectors, you’ve entered the realm of other mobile technology that is on such a mass market area, it could bring in quite a profit. I never thought that tablets would catch on, but I was dead wrong. I know that mobile projectors could have the same type of effect. There are even some smartphones out there that are including projectors in them. This is where I see promise. This is where I can see the future happening. We have the incredible displays on our smartphones and tablets. Why not make the picture large enough for everyone to see? We have cameras on the backs of our devices. Why not add a projector? This can pave the way for pico projectors to be a more dominant version of projectors on the market as well. The idea is being mobile. We are always moving as a society, so why not add it to literally every tech device we have?

Almost everything tech related that we use is mobile today. Our game systems, our computers, and our phones, are all now basically one in the same. All inclusive in one device or more. I can only see this being the case for projectors in the near future. It would only make sense. Projectors are going to move and become more mobile with us, just like every other technology. It’s only a matter of time before we seem them available for purchase and rental on the mass market.

Does Microsoft’s Project Ripple Hold Any Merit For Use With Projectors?

Wednesday, June 4th, 2014

rippleI’ve always been the type of man to embrace innovation and new ideas. It’s who I am as a person. While I’ve not done the most work with projectors, I do understand enough about them to carry a conversation. I also know well enough to know when I see a good product or marketing idea. Again, I’m all for trying new things, but then there are certain ideas that I see that I feel could have been… better executed I should say. The idea I’m talking about is one of Microsoft’s new projects. The newest idea budding from the tech giant company is “Project Ripple”.

To understand what Project Ripple is, you really need only look at the video to get the basic understanding of it. It’s much like what you may have experienced as a kid when you went to the museum or what ever “family fun learning facilities” you might have went to. The screens you would stand in front of to and flail your body about to make waves on the screen or see yourself in “thermal vision”. That is essentially what Project Ripple is, albeit with a bit more finesse. You’ve even seen things like these at the mall. I know I’ve seen something like that at one of the malls by my house.

What Microsoft is referring to it as, is a “projector-based infotainment center”.  The difference between their system and the ones you’ve seen at shopping centers and museums? It works with two different projectors and is mainly operated by your feet. No, I’m not kidding. While Microsoft has said that it is, in fact, similar to what we’ve seen around publicly, they’ve also admitted to a few sources that they don’t feel that the public technology isn’t living up to its full potential.

Now this may be a true statement, but Microsoft feels that their Project Ripple will be the one to bring that technology’s true potential out onto the surface. What you normally see when dealing with these types of interactive projectors is one screen. The “screen” would be directly at your feet facing from overheard. Microsoft’s version will be dealing with 2 separate projectors. You will now have a screen in front of you and a screen at your feet. The display in front of you will be utilized with the company’s Kinect motion tracking camera. You’ll use your feet for the bottom screen and your hands for the screen in front of you.

One thing that Microsoft noted, was that this wouldn’t be a product. This will be a free open-source program. Microsoft is still designing a multitude of editing tools that will allow users to create just about anything in terms of what they may want. Everything from video content, to Flash, and even HTML will be able to be edited directly in the program. This could lead to specialized ads that could be interactive or even add some flare to a special occasion or presentation event. The ideas are there, that’s for sure, but it still begs the question of practicality. In today’s world, if it’s not practical, it’s not marketable.

If the community is very receptive of this type of software, and want to take the time out of their day to work with it and create something very cool and amazing, then yes this could definitely be a useful tool for projectors. Then again, you have to think of why people get projectors in the first place. Many don’t have a need for this type of software, so Microsoft may be catering to a very small audience. Only time will tell if Project Ripple will actually make some waves.

Could LUMO Interactive Projector Be A Worthy Investment?

Tuesday, December 17th, 2013

lumoprojectorThe end of the year comes to a close and with it we see last minute scrambles from companies trying to push their end of the year products. This is never a bad plan, but it is a common one. Because of this, many companies’ products go unnoticed. Whether it be due to longer release dates or just getting lost in the sea of other gadgets that come out during this time of year, some products do get swept under the rug. With that being said, there are a few that can peak interest.

Remember when you were a kid, and how the floor was lava, and pillows were the rocks that could save you from melting? Well now a new projector may be able to give that same nostalgia back to your kids.

Yes, it may be a bit childish at first, but the LUMO Interactive projector may be one of the best “toys” or “gifts” you could ever give to your child. With adaptable and ever expanding library of games, there could be quite a bit of longevity in this product. From soccer, to lava floors, to entry level memory matching games, the LUMO projector could be sure to entertain both kids and adults’ inner child as well.

By utilizing the projector’s micro processor and motion sensor, the realm of augmented reality is open to your child. The projector’s camera and light source both come standard with IR filters and IR modes for easier recognition at night. Designed to actually attach and project from the ceiling, it leaves the projector out of reach of children so that fear of it being damaged can be all but gone from your thoughts.

Sitting at $500, it is a bit pricey for a “child’s toy”, but the real value comes in at the expansive app and game library. Remember, there will be games and apps constantly added.

Another scenario. Albeit a children’s device, having an interactive projector in the company break room could be a nostalgic stress reliever. Depending on the apps and games that could be designed for this projector specifically, it could become a decent investment for any office. What better way to create a more friendly and fun work environment than by having a friendly augmented reality soccer game in the break room. Again, a lot of the games an apps would need a bit more mature design, but if the market calls for it, why not?

With only $23,000 of the $200,000 goal met by the end of the Kickstarter, it may be a while before we actually see this product up and ready for consumer use.
